The Nonprofit Advantage: Adding to your Skill Set

A friend of mine was complaining that she would like to move into a different career area but she doesn't have the skill set.  With family, work, etc. she can't pay for school right now.  I told her to join a great nonprofit, suhch as the Junior  League Palo Alto Mid-Peninsula.  Nonprofits are the great training organizations, and the Junior League is among the best.

I am highly involved in nonprofits and have seen the good and the bad, and I have to say the Junior League is one of the best.  Not only does is it fun and do all kinds of things like fight childhood obeisity, work to stop the cycle of poverty, and increase literacy rates in lower socioeconomic classes, but also it provides an opportunity to learn new skills.  You can sit in PR/Marketing, learn about web building, develop fundraising skills (which by the way can help you everywhere), go out and teach, learn accounting, etc.  It's like a cheap MBA from some of the brightest women with great connections.

If you want to expand your skill set, check out your local Junior League or nonprofit of choice.  It's a great opportunity and something you can feel good about, too.  If you are in the San Mateo - Sunnyvale area, you can check out the Junior League in Palo Alto.  Information below:
