STAYING IN THE GAME

I recently received a lovely note from our corporate lawyer just checking in and seeing how business was going.  He loves the idea of Cubes&Crayons and wanted to see what kind of progress we were making.  How thoughtful!  He then said he would love to chat and catch up if I had a moment; he had some new things in the works.  After several scheduling mishaps, we finally connected a week ago.

I told him about our 6 month anniversary, our expansion plans, going for funding, etc.  I asked him how he was doing and he told me about his plans to re-enter the corporate world.  After a little over a year on his own, he was contemplating a new area of law or going back to corporate counsel.  We wrapped up the conversation with ideas in both our heads about how we could help each other.  Less than a week later, I received a letter from him thanking me for my time and reiterating his career goals and qualifications.  Brilliant!

This man understood the importance of relationship in helping him to build his career.  He didn't ask me straight out for anything.  He took time and genuine interest in my company which was the source of our original relationship.  He followed up with a letter with his qualifications, and now of course, I have the letter on my desk and am thinking of connections I have to a great job for a highly qualified and intelligent corporate counsel. So in order to stay in the corporate/career game, he is working on his relationships, and I would almost bet money that is where is next job will come from.

Lesson?  It is all about the relationships you build whether it is a career or business or ...  YournRamp talks about the importance of building those relationships as you get off the career track and nurturing them although way back on to the career track.
Now who out there knows a job for this lawyer friend of mine????
