We had a chance to check-in with Jamie and ask her about her career and family. Here's her story.
How did you get started in fashion?
My family was more conventional in their style sense and I was "dragged" on monthly shopping trips to Saks Fifth Avenue. This proved frustrating at times, as I was not permitted to buy clothes considered “trendy.” So, I decided to make my own! I was inspired by my grandmother to learn to sew by hand, and later on a sewing machine that I received for my 13th birthday.
Then it was off to college. After a very academic and esoteric Ivy League experience, where I focused on religion, language and Middle Eastern studies, I was drawn back into the world of fashion.
I attended the one-year program at FIT concentrating on sportswear design. I incorporated my newly learned hand knitting skills into my work, and won the Critic’s Award for my final project based on architectural origami.
Sensing a need for a women’s collection that embodied a sense of whimsy and fun, Jamie Kreitman® was born in 1991. I created knitted buttons and trims - signature elements featured on my tailored knit jackets and sweaters. A few years later, I introduced T-shirts and fleece pieces with knitted embellishments. This was in response to the casual dress revolution. As a result of this trend, I coordinated flip-flops with the apparel collection in 2001. After this success, I created ballet shoes to be comfortable, casual yet fashionable and glamorous. It became my mission to prove that you can still be a glamour girl with your feet firmly planted on the ground!
Today I currently live in the New York metropolitan area with my family and Coton de Tulear dog in a Victorian style home reminiscent of my childhood. My ultimate goal at the end of the day is to relax with a good book and divine white chocolate. A simple pleasure!
What's it like balancing a design career with family? HAIRY. Finding the quiet time to think creatively often leads me to burning the midnight candle and beyond.
Is there a designer mom network where you can support one another and share best practices? No. Unfortunately, many other mothers do not work and look askance upon women with careers. However, I have a fantastic support team consisting of colleagues, sales reps and most importantly, my husband.
Who's your mentor? How does she/he support you career and family life? My mentor is Ruth Hornbein, a renown children's sweater designer. She has worked around my schedule and has supported me since day one.
