POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT – DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATE
Organizational Overview
City Year unites a diverse corps of young adults, ages 17 to 24, for a demanding year of full-time community service and leadership development. These young leaders work as tutors and mentors to school children and mobilize volunteers in physical community service projects. Founded in 1988 in Boston, City Year now has 1,500 corps members serving in 17 cities across the U.S. and in South Africa. City Year Los Angeles was founded in 2007 and has ambitious plans to grow the program dramatically over the next few years.
Position Overview
As City Year Los Angeles plans to grow our program over the next several years, creating and implementing a robust fundraising strategy will be crucial to the success of the organization. The Development Associate will work closely with the Development Manager to manage existing relationships with donors and identify new prospects. Part of a small team, the Development Associate will garner significant experience working with key streams of non-profit donors- individuals, foundations, corporations, and event attendees.
With supervision and guidance from the Development Manager, the primary duties of the Development Associate include:
- Manage and track CYLA’s donations and collections process.
- Assist with Corporate Team Sponsor program.
- Manage and edit monthly updates to donors.
- Assist in coordinating logistics for annual fundraising dinner.
- Conduct in-depth prospect research.
- Contribute to grant and report writing.
- Assist in planning and implementing special events including Opening Day, Friend-raisers, and Corporate Breakfast.
- Prepare and generate appropriate collateral for meetings and events.
- Serve as staff liaison to Ambassador Team of corps members.
Skills and Requirements
- 1-2 years experience and proven track record of success inside nonprofit environment.
- Excellent written and oral communications skills
- Ability to work under pressure, multi-task, and respond to short notice deadlines
- Strong interpersonal, analytical and problem solving skills; capacity to strategically imagine, plan and implement new ideas and leads
- Proven track record in building long term relationships with internal and external clients
- Strong attention to detail and proven organizational and project management skills
- High degree of initiative; high energy, entrepreneurial spirit
- Commitment to community service, national service and the development of young people as leaders
- Strong passion for City Year’s mission of delivering high impact service to children and institutions in Los Angeles communities; developing young people in the corps as powerful civic leaders, and promoting the concept of national service.
- Must be proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite and willing to learn Raiser’s Edge.
- Excellent attention to details and ability to effectively organize people and information.
- BA/BS required.
- Personal enthusiasm, optimism, and sense of humor, and comfort with creative processes.
