Gaps in my career

I am wondering how to explain gaps in my career that are not related to having kids. I have two kids and have been out of the workforce for 6 years. Before I had kids I had a career in advertising that was interrupted twice when I took time off to care for my elderly parents. I don't want to seem like a flake and my resume looks like a patchwork.
