Little Children Little Problems and Visa Versa

When I had 3 kids under four years old I was busy, very busy. The days were long and sometimes it seemed like there was no end in sight. I hated when people would see me and tell me “Enjoy these days, they go by so fast.” Yea, right I would say under my breath, easy for you to say. But at the same time I knew it was going by fast. I loved being at home with my kids. I am not saying I loved everyday, luckily that is not required for motherhood. But overall I was grateful to be there. We sacrificed a lot to be able to do it. It was worth it. When people would tell us how lucky we were to have such great kids I would thank them but I knew luck had very little to do with it. My Grandmother used to say “little children, little problems. Big children, big problems.” And while I haven’t had anything close to a big problem with any of my children at anytime, now that they are older the problems are worse because there is so little I can do for them. The little problems were cured with a kiss and a band-aid. I know that sounds simplistic but its true. I was all powerful, defeating monsters in the closet, retrieving the lost toy from under the bed. I know that the kids thought I could solve any problem and that is exactly what I wanted them to think. Now that they are 20, 18 and 16 my magic has faded. It’s killing me.

While in my rational mind (yes I do have one) I know that it’s time for them to make their own decisions and go out in the world. My heart is a different story. Like letting go of their tiny hand when they started to walk, it has to be done. I can handle almost everything, so far anyway, except the matters of the heart. I’ve only had a couple of “significant” others so far. I made my mind up years ago that if they liked them then I would like them and so far that hasn’t been difficult. But when hearts get broken all bets are off. It’s an empty threat. There isn’t anything I can do. For now I try not to get too attached. Is anyone really going to be good enough? Ask any mother and she will tell you than being helpless in the sight of your child’s pain is the hardest thing you’ll ever have to do. It takes a piece of your soul. This second stage of motherhood has really just begun for me. Courage is required. My courage comes from my own mother who has been through BIG problems. It’s always a matter of perspective. Isn’t it always? So when the days seem long and you’ve kissed away a million tears take heart and remember that you have to solve what you can and let go of the things you can’t. Things could always be worse but they will probably get better. Really, enjoy the moments, the good, the bad and the ugly they are all worth it.
