The Tech Geek That I am.......

It is classic.....When I got married in 1994, my husband was THE TECH guy.  At least that is what I thought.  He kept saying, "Hey look. How cool is this?"  It was American Online, at its beginning, and the start of email and content on the web, at least for us.  I thought it was neat, but I didn't really use it.  It was a little too slow for me and I didn't know what to look for on the web.  Somehow, someway and somewhere along the lines our roles reversed.

I started getting into the tech stuff and the gadgets and realized how great it was and how it really began to streamline my life.  All of my girlfriends, however, thought I was crazy and left the tech stuff up to their husbands.  But as I would tell them, if you have patience and give it time, it is so easy and so fun.  It is also a GREAT way to stay current if you are out of the workplace and raising your kids.  One of the problems for women who take time off is that technology can pass them by and when they re-enter it is just another hurdle that they have to overcome.

In my opinion, mind you it is jut my opinion, why so many of my friends are fearful of technology is that they are on a PC Computer.  No I don't work for Apple, nor do I get any money from them.  It is the Apple computer that has changed my life.  Why you may ask? It simplifies EVERYTHING, it is INTUITIVE, and all of their programs COMMUNICATE to each other.  I have only been using a Mac computer for the past 4 years and I can't even begin to tell you how easy it. Yes, I had to take the time to learn a new way of using the computer but the upstart was short while the benefit was huge.

Now I had a Mac and I thought I was going to use it just as a computer.  Wow, was I wrong.  4 years later, I have 4 Mac computers in my house, because they are not just for computing.  I have learned that I can do such cool things with them and that they have really transformed our house and simplified my life.  I have set up a wireless network, installed an AppleTV, put in a computer station for the kids (with an old retired computer which I reformatted), installed a new hard drive ($100 fix versus $500 through apple) on an old computer that my husband wanted to throw away, set up a digital computer (this is the best and will elaborate next week in my blog), designed a computer back up system so if anything happens to my computer all of my documents, movies, pictures and music are saved, set up a website, synced blackerries and ipods (we have had 5 so far), and attached a printer to our network so all computers could print wirelessly.  I did not have any formal training.  Because Macs are so simple, a lot of it really is plug and play.  Maybe you could say, as I am sure a lot of my friends would say, I am cheap and I should just hire someone to do the above.  Buy why pay someone, when you can do a google search on, for example, How do I install a hard drive for a imac g4 computer and another google search on What hard drive does this imac g4 require.  EVERYTHING is online my friends!  They even have pictures to go with it!

I look forward to sharing with you all of the cool things I do on my computer, the fun gadgets I own, and things I have found on the web that help me streamline my personal and professional life.  My biggest problem was that I didn't even know what was out there and what it was for and how it could make my life easier.  I can't wait to share with you all of the neat things I have have found!  Stay tuned........
