Need Help Getting Back In? How about a couple of tips from a girlfriend?

Yesterday I received a great email with some tips on getting back in.  I know they may seem pretty straight forward but they are good and are something to think about.  Try them and share with others your thoughts and suggestions.  We all have so many great ideas and can learn from each other.  Re-entering the workforce can be hard, but it helps having a support group.  Use our network!  Let me know what works for you.

  1. Get Your Name Out. Even if you decide to take time off, you don’t want to miss any great opportunities. Distribute your resume to recruiters that specialize in your field.  It takes time to find the right job.
  2. Know What is Going on in Your Field. Take courses that support your career goals and advance your skill set. Stay current in your field.
  3. Keep a Pulse on the Job Market. Peruse job ads and talk with professionals on a regular basis.
  4. Get Help Where Needed.   If you are having a problem writing that resume and cover letter, call in the experts!  A great resume and cover letter is vital to you getting that job.
  5. Use Your Network. Work your network throughout your career, not just in your time of need. Join networking groups, stay in touch with former managers, and reach out to associates in related fields regularly.
  6. Set Goals. It always takes more time than you think to seek out job opportunities, network with people, and write cover letters. Create a daily and weekly to develop structure to your search and to keep your time focused.
  7. Follow Up.  Check-in regularly with hiring managers, follow through on leads and don't forget your thank yous to those that make an introduction.
  8. Don't Act on Fear. When faced with the choice of a "not so ideal" job and another month of unemployment, it is easy to give-in and accept a job that isn't really what you want. The problem is that you're probably not going to be happy, and then you'll just find yourself right back at step one. If possible, hold out for the position that more closely matches your target.
  9. Know When to Compromise. Identify the important factors in that perfect job and know where you may be willing to compromise.
  10. Do What You Love.  Find the job that makes you happy.

Good luck with your job search.  If you have an OnRamp story that you would like to share with the community email me!
