The To Do List – An Ever growing Entity

With 48 days until Cubes & Crayons officially opens it doors and 41 days until our preview party, the pressure is on. I would be nowhere without my to do lists. Each day starts with one, often with many items from the previous day. The goal is not necessarily to get through every item each day, but to always have a picture of all the items that need to get done.

Some days for every item that gets checked off, five more items are added. The contractor took down the partitions at our new campus and then we discovered we had to hire a t bar contractor. The t bar contractor started the job only to call and tell me that we needed an electrician and duct specialist to move some items in the ceiling. Other days, items are neatly and succinctly taken care of…press kit is assembled; business cards have been picked up; painting is complete.

I write them on scraps of paper, in organized files on the computer, or on napkins at the local café. The format changes but the process remains the same…thinking about what needs to get done, breaking it down into doable chunks, and writing it all down. Seeing it all there, I can quickly check off a 5 minute item when I grab an unexpected moment or can take on a larger task when time and energy allow.

The problem and asset of the to do list is not allowing me to miss something but also allowing me to let go. With my two little ones needing lots of time, some times the to do list gets written and maybe only one item is crossed off in a day. Still, I feel relieved at having everything on that list and feel like I can look at it at any time and assess where we are and where we are going.

For a mompreneur such as myself, I could not live without my to do list. Forty eight days left until opening…how many items will be on the to do list from now until then? Will it ever be finished? Probably not, but it will keep me sane from now until January 24th!
