For my grandmothers 80th birthday she wanted all of her children and grandchildren to come out to San Diego and help build a habitat for humanity house for 5 days. Yes 5 days. Can you believe that.? I thought this was supposed to be my valuable summer vacation? Shouldn't I be sitting on the beach with a good book or trashy magazine? What do I know about building a house?
When we went out to the habitat house, there were 7 little two-story town houses in a lot outside San Diego. The first day working on the habitat house, I painted one of the many rooms. I ruined my pants, destroyed my t-shirt and had paint in my hair! It was aweful and hard and painting the ceiling was a pain! Then i took a break and went to go look around. Guess where I found my mom and my aunt? They were doing the easy jobs, like electrical. So for the next four days, I too decided the only way to go was electrical. It was easy!
Even though I dreaded going to the project every day, I secretly found it rewarding. Many of the future owners, who had to work 500 hours, were there and you should have seen how excited they were. They were so proud and it was going to be the first house they had ever owned. The true American dream. On the last day the news crew came from san diego local news and interviewed my grandma about her birthday! How a crazy old 80 year old woman wanted to give back. The show was on the news the next day and almost everybody was on tv!
