Is the recession changing attitudes about staying home with kids?

I don't regret staying home with my children.  What I regret are the dreadful stereotypes of SAHM's.  Many businesses don't know how to incorporate the learnings and successes of SAHM's into considering candidates.

One executive recruiter asked me if I've used my computer skills at all over the last five years.  I told her that I compiled a database of thousands of Obama supporters in the Cincinnati area prior to the primaries, and transferred the information to the Obama campaign, laying the groundwork for his 72% primary win here.  She said that wasn't applicable since it was "volunteer work."  Indeed, when asked how many people I have supervised, the hundred people I recruited and trained for the campaign also didn't matter since they were volunteers, too.

Recruiters and employers also have a hard time believing that SAHM's keep engaged in their fields... just because it's interesting!  As a finance professional, I've read Sarbanes-Oxley legislation during my kids' naps and can have an easy conversation on mark-to-market accounting, simply because I find it interesting.  Really!

I was also recently denied membership to a financial executive networking group that explicitly stated that its members had to have a minimum of 15 years of increasingly complex finance and accounting assignments.  Since I banked fifteen years prior to becoming a SAHM, I thought I was a shoo-in.  However, my recent five-year gap disqualified me.  I should have been suspicious when the local leader asked me more about my husband's high school than about my experience with my MBA, ranked by the WSJ as the #1 MBA program in the United States this past year.

I applied my management knowledge as a chairperson on the Annual Fund for my daughters' school.  We went on to beat the historical school record for the most money raised in a single year... and during the worst economic year since the Great Depression!  But when this was brought up to a bank executive recently, she said that my experience was not "valuable" since it has not been with Corporate America.  Yes, my value was snubbed by A BANKER, the lowest life form on the planet right now.

I should have seen this coming when a friend gave me an article on SAHM's last fall.  Leading the text was a picture of a woman wearing a tied silk robe, slowly ascending a stairway while holding a mug appropriate for a nice frothy latte.  Where is she going?  To her bedroom to watch a brain-deadening women's show before a brief nap?  A more appropriate image would be a woman with an untied robe, ascending the stairs two steps at a time, balancing a pile of shoes and toys, with no scalding and dangerous coffee in sight.

I see intelligent and accomplished SAHM's all the time.  It's time their talents are rightly recognized.
