Need to Find a Job? Stop Looking so Hard

Today I read a blog from Peter Bregman that rang so true to me I had to share it:

Do you know anyone who tried for years to have a baby but couldn't? Then, after giving up, maybe after adopting, suddenly, surprisingly, got pregnant?

Or someone who was dying to be in a relationship? Dated all the time, but never met the right person. Then, after accepting he would be alone, started focusing on other things and, lo and behold, met someone and got married?

How about someone who lost her job? Maybe she spent the next year working on her resumé, perusing job sites, devoting all her energy to getting work. All to no avail. Then, after deciding to stop looking so hard, out of the blue, came a great job offer?

What is that? A karmic journey? A miracle? Statistical aberration? Pure random chance? Perhaps it never really happens; perhaps we remember those stories precisely because they are so unusual?

This winter I'm living on Donner Summit in CA so my kids can attend a ski race academy. This season I have been joined by several friends that have recently been laid off and have moved from the Bay Area to the mountains to take some time for themselves while they chart their next career. My friends, all Dads, share a passion for skiing. Two are training to become ski patrol and one is working in the Race department at our local mountain for minimum wage. What they all have in common is they are having the time of their lives. They are happy and yes they are "casually" networking on the chairlift with friends that may ultimately help them find a "real" job (if they choose to want one). The bottom line is people hire people and even though I run a website with a job board and espouse the virtures of Twitter and social networking, your online time has to be balanced with real face to face encounters. It's a lot more fun and relaxing to "network" on a chairlift than to put on a suit everyday and "pretend" to go to work. So if your job search has you in the dumps, think outside the box and into something you enjoy. You may be pleasantly surprised with the results.
