What a great show to highlight the professional value a woman can retain after a career break! This debut show on TLC Monday night offered much-needed encouragement to women who have taken a detour on their career paths. In determining whether she still had “it,” Adrian had to overcome the skepticism of specialists in her field and her own self-doubt. In Hollywood style the career dream on hold was, of course, a glamorous career in fashion design. She was fortunate to have unwavering support from her husband who believed in her talent and was truly supportive of her return to the workforce.
However, at the end of the episode I was left with a nagging question: Why did she have to make a choice between family and work? Aren’t there a whole host of options between the two extremes? If the design company managed before Adrian, why wouldn’t they appreciate the contributions Adrian could make three days a week? Or five days 9 to 3? Why was it all or nothing? Isn’t it that same forced choice that put her where she was to begin with at the beginning of the show?
Many of us may envy her reality show opportunity, but perhaps not the intense pressure to choose work versus family. YourOnRamp to the rescue!
